THE POPEYE DOLLS

Described variously as ‘agit-folk’ and as a band of ‘no fixed personnel’ the Popeye Dolls are inextricably linked with the Cymmer Rouge. Their sporadic appearances are invariably in support of related or charitable causes, the line up being determined by availability or commitment to the particular cause of the day.

Since the 1970’s Welsh folk music has had inevitable connections with Huw Chi Minh and the Cymmer Rouge particularly through their influence on The Popeye Dolls. This is evident in songs like The National Sport and their versions of the Cymmer Rouge anthems The Lobster Song and Jack In His Glory. Such songs have been given progressively more radical treatment over the years by the Deadmans Danceband and the Huw Mingus Quantet. Many purists prefer the original versions by the Dolls.
