By the time that Huw Brys’, their first grandchild was born in 1948 their correspondence suggests a closer relationship with Picasso. Letters from that time make reference to the home of Picasso at that time, Le Galloise at Vallouris and there is play on the name as the ‘Welsh House’. In the 1950's their correspondence was increasingly from the Cote Vermilion or the adjacent Costa Brava in Spain which they increasingly favoured over the Riviera and in 1953 and 1954 there was further contact with Picasso who visited first Perpignan then nearby Collioure on the coast. Picasso was said to have envied the property that they had acquired on the hill above Collioure and Port Vendres which commanded a panoramic view of the sea, the coast and its towns. |

The relationship between Picasso and Brys’ grandmother and great aunt -the Bouvier sisters- is not that well documented in the many biographies of the artist. Although wealthy they were among the many clamoring for his work and attention during his career. Although beautiful neither appear to have succumbed to his other notorious talent. Both appear to have had contact with Picasso from the 1920’s. Brys’ grandparents certainly met with Picasso during their honeymoon at Cap d’Antibes in 1923. From their correspondence with relatives it would appear that they had previously met Picasso in Paris or elsewhere. They were clearly friendly and, coincidentally, met again in the same area a decade later when celebrating their tenth wedding anniversary. Again this would appear to have been an entirely coincidental meeting of casual acquaintances. |
