The severance of Huw Brys’ direct links with Wales began with his parents divorce and his mothers relocation to Long Island in early 1967. She subsequently remarried and Brys had little to do with his stepfather. In early 1967 Brys visited New York and met Andy Warhol again through the influence and contacts of his Grandmother. During her first visit to her daughters new home outside New York it would appear that there were disagreements with her new son in law and she decamped to Manhattan. From her apartment Brys enjoyed visits to Warhols Factory, the major art galleries, some clubs in Greenwich Village and a round of parties.

Brys has never confirmed any direct contact with John Cale and the Velvet Underground at this time. Many have considered this a probability given the link with Warhol and Cale is from Garnant on the edge of the Black Mountains where the Brys family had mining interests.

Among the people that Brys also met through his grandmother, possibly in New York at that time, was Salvador Dali. The contact here is again through the Catalonian connections and language. Brys grandparents had an intimate knowledge of Dali’s home ground although they do not appear to have had a great liking for him either as an artist or a person.

Brys however certainly absorbed the influence of the surrealist and has frequently quoted many of the themes of Dali an other surrealists - most notably Magritte- in his work.
